This project provides experimental data on the performance of an NCFSK digital modem operating over the ESSA ionospheric channel simulator. The channel conditions simulated were typical of a two-path medium composed of a nonfading ground wave signal and a delayed, Rayleigh-fading sky wave signal. During tests, the probability of a bit error occurring was measured as a function of various parameters, such as signal-to-noise ratio, time delay of the sky wave signal, frequency shift and frequency spread of the sky wave signal, and multipath power ratio. Noise for the tests was supplied from a Gaussian noise generator, an atmospheric noise simulator, and recordings of man-made noise.
