In order to summarize extensive research in self-lubricating bearings, porosity of powder metallurgy materials is analyzed with equations, graphs, and microphotos of both compacted and sintered metals of various densities used in plain slide bearings. The effects of increasing sintering temperatures from 200 C to 1000 C upon porosity and wear resistance in bearing metal are analyzed as related to speed of operation and bearing load. Permeability of porous bushings to oil and gas lubricants is examined with reference to a large number of small pores and small number of large pores, and to geometric shape of pores which depends on the size and distribution of particles in the compacted metal powder.
