This report deals with the proposed application of the optimum statistical detector to the transmission of high speed greater than 10 Mbs data rates over a selective fading medium such as troposcatter. The detection technique is applied to a troposcatter link where the transmitted symbols are much shorter than the multipath delay period. A recursive computational procedure is suggested for implementation if the channel impulse response and the noise statistics are known. It is concluded that within present day power and bandwidth limitations it is possible to communicate satisfactorily at data rates of approximately 20 Megabits per second. The main area of study was devoted to deriving the performance of a nearly optimum detector, based upon a channel mode of Bello and Nelin. Performance curves are presented for two specific links both with and without dual space diversity. For error rates below 10 to the -6th power, the predicted performance at high data rates actually exceeds the performance at lower rates. Author
