Problems in Thermodynamic Research on the Subsonic Stage of an Axial Compressor,

The article analyzes problems in the thermodynamic investigation and in the design of a stage with a relatively long rotor blade, and gives the initial equations for the calculation of the flow field of the axial stage, along with decisive criteria for the calculation. The analysis was made with a view to using the stage in a front fan by-pass engine. A radial equilibrium equation is obtained by the solution of a system of thermodynamic flow equations, and the flow field of the stage was calculated for the axially symmetrical case with an approximation of the actual shape of the streamlines in a meridian plane. The characteristics of several stages are given, and the operating characteristics of a stage were verified in the vicinity of the surge line and the rotating stall.
