The first development model, the X2062-F, meets the requirements of Phase V 200 kW PEP with intermodulation distortion ratios of -43 db or better. This represents an improvement in intermodulation distortion of approximately 15 db over the prototype 4CV250,000. The tube was r-f evaluated at 4 MHz, but showed signs of thermal runaway of the vapor cooled anode when operated at slightly more than the required power output. The tube was rebuilt using the latest vapor cooled anode design. This new anode is capable of dissipating 300 kW, and will be used on all models developed for Phase V. The second development model, the X2062-G, also meets the intermodulation distortion requirements of Phase V as determined by computer analysis of grid voltage-plate current transfer characteristics. A vacuum leak, caused by defective material in the tube, terminated high power testing at 4 MHz. The tube has been repaired and is ready to be pumped. The X2062-H, the third development model, has been designed with new grids. The mounted grid assembly is complete and awaiting the anode assembly. Work is continuing on development of a computer program to calculate intermodulation distortion generated by a non-linear transfer characteristic. The input signal consists of a noise spectrum having constant power density over a given bandwidth and a Gaussian probability density distribution. Author
