Abstract:

A considerable number of microwave devices now use ferrites in the partially magnetized state. In order to assist the design engineer in predicting the performance of such devices, this report presents data on the microwave permeability of a wide range of ferrites as a function of magnetization and frequency. The materials covered include yttrium iron garnets with alluminum andor gadolinium substitutions, calcium vanadium indium garnets, magnesium manganese ferrites with aluminum or zinc substitution and nickel ferrites with aluminum andor cobalt substitution. The data covers the three tensor elements, mu, kappa, and mu sub z. The real parts of these elements provide the phase shift in a microwave device while the imaginary parts cause loss. In addition to the low power properties the high power or threshold properties have been studied. Correlation between the threshold properties of the completely magnetized and partially magnetized state has been established. Some limited device calculations have been made on a reciprocal twin slab phase shifter to illustrate the use of the ferrite data generated in this program in doing computer aided designs. Author
