Shell Parameter Influence on the Failure Mode of Side - On Air Blast Loaded Cylinders

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the influence of the shell size parameters, length-to-diameter ratio and diameter-to-thickness ratio, on the failure mode of cylinders under side-on air blast loading. These failure modes are 1 hinge collapse, 2 wave buckling, and 3 combination. The results of this study show that the diameter-to-thickness, Dh, ratio dominates the shell behavior and that for values of Dh below 110, hinge collapse seems to be dominant between 110 and 450, combination failure seems to be dominant above 450, wave buckling seems to be dominant.
