SLIM anomalies are caused by excessive stresses formed in the propellant grain. This transportation test was conducted to evaluate the effect of transportation on motors known to contain SLIM type anomalies. The test consisted of instrumenting a Minuteman Missile, in its normal transporter environment, with accelerometers to measure G loadings and strain gages to define some of the stresses imposed on the motor carriages. The route was via the normal rail route between Hill AF Base, Utah and Malmstrom AFB, Montana. Instrumentation was monitored continuously and significant events were recorded on command. Maximum observed G loadings were First Stage - Forward, 0.53 First Stage - Heat Shield Aft, 1.09 Rail Car Deck, 2.51 Transporter Cross Brace, 3.50. Maximum observed stress was 1705 microinches per inch on the forward section of the third stage carriage. It is concluded that transportation and handling procedures cause propagation of SLIM type anomalies in propellant grains.
