Abstract:

Two major aspects of the reliability of propellant-actuated devices are discussed functional reliability, or the go-no-go aspect, and performance reliability, which measures a functioning device against specifications. In measuring functional reliability, the probability of success or failure for n trials is described by the binomial distribution function. With limited sampling, however, reliability cannot be reasonably determined by this means alone. Performance reliability can be estimated successfully if the test measurement of significant performance parameters yields normally distributed variations i.e., the mean values lie within the maximum or minimum limits specified. Changes in a final engineering test program for propellant-actuated devices are recommended to improve the calculated and actual reliability of devices so tested. Author
