Investigations were conducted to study the problems of intra-aircraft communications systems and to formulate guidelines for establishing design standards for the development of such systems. Time-division-multiplexed TDM and frequency-division-multiplesed FDM data systems offer worthwhile savings in weight and complexity, and many different multiplexing techniques have been proposed. However, none is fully qualified to date, and there is no best system presently designated. In addition to recommending guidelines for standardizing intra-aircraft communication system design, this report describes various techniques involved in system development and cites examples of types of hardware that might be used to obtain an optimum capability.
