Abstract:

The thermal behavior of rayon yarn after treatment with various chlorosilanes was determined. It was found that 70 of the available hydroxyl groups in rayon would react with dichlorodiphenylsilane in refluxing pyridine. The treated yarn exhibited an initial decomposition temperature which was 125C higher than that of untreated rayon. The weight losses of the treated yarns at 800C were dependent on the nature of the chlorosilane and the type of post treatment used. It was found that alkyl chlorosilanes produced higher weight losses than did the aryl chlorosilane treated rayons. Author
