Abstract:

This report summarizes the results of a character recognition techniques study performed in accordance with DDP Contract PG 727001-5 between 1 January 1968 and 31 March 1969. Volume 1 of the report recommends paper handling, scanning and recognition techniques. In addition, document quality specifications are listed and recommendations for further studies are presented. Typewritten and hand-printed recognition techniques are evaluated in Appendices A and B, respectively. Scanning techniques are appraised in Appendix C. The breadboard character recognition systems arising from the evaluations are described in Appendix D. Volume 2 describes in detail the selected recognition and scanning techniques evaluated in Volume 1. Author
