Abstract:
This volume includes descriptions of the test link, its instrumentation and a detailed presentation of the results of the tests which were conducted. The test facilities include a link of 7 kilometers in length which provides the option of a grazing or clear path, and instrumentation to transmit, using FM, a digital signal at up to 10 MHz bit rate. Data covering error rates, signal levels and meteorology is stored and analyzed. The results of data interpretation are presented using tables, graphs and photographs. These indicate that fading is not severe and does not exhibit periodicity, except in the case of a grazing path at 35 GHz, where signal level variations are sinusoidal with respect to time. Fading is associated with slight increases in the error probabilities. Precipitation increases the error probability associated with a particular carrier to noise ratio but the effect is pronounced only if snow is the disturbing factor. Both rain and snow noticeably increase propagation losses. Author
