Abstract:

This report is the Final Report as required by Project Mallard Technique study TSE-5 Task Directive 12. It gives a complete picture of work done on the study, and analyses delta modulation and multiplexing techniques. Three basic types of delta modulator were selected for modelling and testing Companded Sigma Delta GEC-Mk3, Variable Slope Delta type 1, and Continuous Delta. The use of one multiplexed modulator and of discrete modulators with post multiplexing was modelled. No significant degradation in performance was found to be associated with the multiplexing process. Extensive Subjective testing, using Fairbanks Rhyme tests, was undertaken to determine intelligibility and useful dynamic range. These tests were supported by objective and further subjective tests. In all tests a sampling rate of 19.2kbs was used, and good intelligibility scores were obtained under these conditions. Some limited testing was also carried out on other delta modulators, viz. VSD modulator designed at National Security Agency, HIDM and BVSDA versions of VSD, Simple Sigma-Delta, and the Digitally Controlled Delta Modulation System designed by Philips staff, Eindhoven.
