Abstract:
Material taken from 6Al-4V titanium rocket motor cases was tested with precrack Charpy impact specimens to evaluate the following as factors affecting plane-stress crack toughness andor chamber performance 1 anisotropy and inhomogeneity, 2 forging practice die, ring-roll and extrusion, 3 interstitial-element chemistry, and 4 test temperature. The material was obtained from 14 hydroburst Minuteman chambers, nine of which were premature-proof-test failures, four were successfully hydroburst chambers, and one failed after 11 proof-test cycles. Material sampling included the immediate vicinity of fracture origins in an attempt to correlate fracture toughness and chamber performance.
