Submarine Sediment Investigation in the Vicinity of the Planned Sealab III Habitat.

A preliminary investigation of the surficial sediments at the SEALAB III Test Site shows the textural, compositional, and engineering properties to be uniform in both makeup and distribution. Sands and silty sands are the dominant textural grade. Mean diameters range from 0.09 to 0.25 mm. Carbonate content ranges from 55 to 78 percent. The carbonate in the form of biogenic calcite. Detrital silicates feldspars, quartz, illite, and chlorite and minor amounts of organic matter are the remaining constituents present. Wet unit weights and water contents percent dry weight on individual samples range from 1.56 to 1.71 gcucm and from 45 to 77 percent, respectively. Direct shear tests were performed on a prepared sediment sample to determine the range of angles of internal friction. Author
