Abstract:

Three model solid explosives of the N-aryl-N-tosyloxydi-imide N-oxide system were thermally decomposed in the beam of an infrared spectrophotometer. Quantitative data from the infrared spectrograms were used to construct decomposition versus time curves. Rate constants were found from the curves, and these were used in turn to determine Arrhenius activation energies and frequency factors. A simple kinetic model was formulated so the Arrhenius values could be associated with plausible physical and chemical processes. Mathematical and experimental techniques were developed for studying continuous reactions in the solid state by infrared spectroscopy. Author
