Abstract:

A dispersive delay line of the perpendicular diffraction grating type was investigated. The delay line operated at 100 MHz with 40 MHz bandwith and 26.7 microsecond dispersion. One of the programs primary goals was insertion loss reduction. To this end a technique was developed that reduced the insertion loss from 95 db best previously obtained to 60 db. A breadboard pulse compression system was fabricated and demonstrated using the delay line. The system exhibited over 10001 pulse compression ratio, 35 ns compressed pulse width at the -3 db points, -33.5 db sidelobe level, and 55 db dynamic range. The system is lightweight, compact, and well suited to airborne applications. It is highly probable that the technique is applicable to pulse compression ratios approaching 100001. Author
