Abstract:

The optical lattice vibrational spectra 45-200cm of organic molecular crystals acenaphthene, anthracene, chrysene, naphthacene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, p-terphenyl and pyrene have been studied using far infrared absorption and Raman scattering. The assignment of long wavelength lattice modes are made employing factor group analysis and in some cases polarized spectra of oriented single crystals. In some cases spectra of deuterated compounds have also been studied. Estimates have been made of the translational lattice mode frequencies and other thermodynamic properties using a 6-12 potential. Two methods have been indicated for obtaining the refractive index of organic liquids in the far infrared region. This involves measurements of reflection or transmission spectra. Author
