Abstract:
A steady-state mathematical model which computes spatial configuration and tension along an orbiting towline has been developed. Numerical results are in agreement with existing flight test data. The model yields multi-valued solutions under certain operating conditions. Operations which avoid these troublesome regimes have been developed. The model cam be used to optimize the performance of operational systems. There are conditions where the desired verticality cannot be obtained with a standard constant diameter towline. Numerical results for a special stepped diameter towline illustrate how the desired high verticality and a reduction of tension can be achieved under such conditions by variation of the towline construction.
