Abstract:

The current available information concerning liquid-injection thrust- vector control from the standpoint of both system performance and analysis is summarized in this report. A detailed description of the complex flow field created by the injection of a liquid into a supersonic nozzle is given on the basis of both experimental information, including pressure measurements and visual evidence, and the theory of compressible fluid flow. Also included is a brief discussion of the important individual processes, such as penetration, atomization, vaporization, and chemical reaction, which are integral parts of the overall flow interaction. Overall system performance and the effects of the many injection parameters are then considered and illustrated with experimental data from a number of sources. The final portion of the report deals with analytical methods for predicting the performance of liquid-injection TVC systems. In particular, a theoretical model based on a detailed flow field solution is described in detail.
