The purpose of this research program was to encapsulate potential sealant and self-sealant components. The microcapsules formed were to be chemically and environmentally resistant, yet possess the capability of being ruptured by such forces as pressure, shock and shear. Two mixtures of triethylene tetramine and Quadrol 1,1,1,1-ethylenedinitrilo tetra-2-propanol have been encapsulated by interfacial polycondensation and formulated into single package capsular self-sealant systems. Evaluations have indicated that both of these systems can be activated by high velocity projectiles and will seal the penetration cavity. Encapsulation of other sealant and self-sealant components include stannous octoate, dibutyltin dilaurate, Adiprene L-100, Hysol hardener and a boron trifluoride etherate complex. The properties and requirements that must be inherent in the capsule for rupture by shock andor shear mechanisms have been defined. Capsular self-sealant formulations were evaluated for shelf-life over a period limited to eight 8 weeks and remained stable. Author
