This test consisted of low-temperature cranking studies of nine engine oils. The test was intended to establish the relationship between oil viscosity as measured in the laboratory and apparent viscosity reflected in cranking speeds and starter current of a compression-ignition engine operated in an ambient temperature of -40 F. Test results indicate that apparent viscosities of the oils under test could not be determined accurately by the CRC-L-49-663 technique.
