Abstract:

The design, construction, and performance of a balanced mode phase shifter suitable for application in a serial array operating at 110 MHz are discussed. The phase shifter is of the variable delay line type with the delay through the device controlled by varying the series inductance and shunt capacitance of the delay line using mechanical translation of the conducting members. Balanced operation of the phase shifter allows propagation of a balanced mode of excitation in which two conductors forming the delay line are excited with opposed voltage of equal magnitude with respect to a shield surrounding the device. This allows direct coupling of the radiating elements to the phase shifter. The study particularly emphasizes the constraints imposed on the phase shifter by the serial array configuration and particularly examines the delay requirements and insertion loss limitations. It is concluded that the designed phase shifter is suitably for application to an array comprised of 100 elements operating over the frequency range from 88 to 150 MHz, although it is expected that the impedance characteristics of the radiating element and its associated coupling network will further limit the frequency range.
