Abstract:
A subscale manufacturing process was developed for the production of continuous single crystal sapphire filament pulled from the melt. A continuous filament pulling device was developed which, when used with rigid and non-rigid filament guidance techniques, allowed uninterrupted pulling to continue for as long as 8 12 hours, when crucible capacity alone became the limiting factor. The continuous filament produced ranged in diameter from 1.15 to 12.40 mils and had a mean tensile strength of 246 kpsi. The grown material exhibited very minor changes in impurity level compared with the raw material used. A maximum repeatable growth rate of 1.5 inmin was achieved, with rates as high as 7 inmin being realized on a short-term basis. Author
