The report is concerned with the development of a JOVIAL compilation system to produce programs executable on the UNIVAC M555. The design concept of the system, the specifics of implementation and the resulting JOVIAL capability are presented. The approach taken united the existing 1604J3 compiler run under PPS with the TRIM assembler capability of the 1604 compiler and the assembly and float generator capability of the M555 system. The 1604 compiler provides the syntactic capability of the J3 language scope. This relatively machine independent set of analyzers is retained except for modifications suitable for the M555 machine characteristics. The code generators, driven by an intermediate language IL are extensively modified to produce TRIM symbolic code acceptable to handle DIRECT code TRIM symbolic imbedded in JOVIAL brackets no change was required to that system. The final system allows for a modular incrementing of language forms, a consistency of operating procedures, and the ability to balance time between two computers. Author
