Abstract:
Optimum high speed steel and carbide cutter geometries were developed for face milling seven aerospace materials comparative cutter life tests were conducted for optimum and standard geometry cutters with the seven materials. Metallurgical and tensile specimens were taken from the seven materials to establish material property values for each. The material and machining property data obtained were correlated to develop empirical machining formulae. Results obtained verified the increased production capabilities of optimum geometry cutters and established formulae to calculate optimum cutter geometries, cutting speeds yielding standard cutter lives, Taylor cutterlife equations, horsepower requirements and other useful machining information.
