Abstract:

The over-all purpose of the program is to investigate the problems of air-worthiness standards applied to the supersonic transport SST. The general objectives are 1 to identify any shortcomings of the operating margins criteria regarding inadvertent speed increases, 2 to evaluate instrument methods by which pilots can efficiently and safely follow Mach altitude climb and descent schedules, 3 to determine the limitations of the present static longitudinal requirements and certification test procedures, 4 to evaluate handling qualities parameters, and 5 to make recommendations for revisions to the present regulations. The program was performed on a moving-base transport simulator and on a fixed-base XB-70 simulator. The work was accomplished in six individual programs with five experienced test pilots participating. The flight envelope was from 0 to 80,000 feet altitude and from Mach 0.2 to 3.2. Several of the conclusions modify currently held concepts.
