A description of an Expanded Tape Listing Program for use on the GE 635645 Computer running under control of the Comprehensive Operating Supervisor is presented. The essential objective of any tape listing program is an output report which is as informative as possible. To achieve this, the data is formatted for easy referencing, and a statement of the quantities of data listed is reported. The scope of the tape listing program described herein not only includes this objective, but is expanded in several directions to sophisticate the basic goal. One of these enhancements enables the user to specify the exact tape file or group of files to be listed. The automatic recognition by the program of the mode in which the tape is written is another. A tape error detection, reporting, and, where possible, recovery system is incorporated. The GE 635645 Console Typewriter is utilized in the interactive mode so that the computer operator has control of the running program and may effect continuation of tape reporting, error recovery or termination of the program. Finally, the program has the inherent capacity to recognize certain situations that are frequently encountered, such as successful tape reads, parity errors, or blank tape encounters. In these cases predetermined courses of action are taken. Author
