Quantitative Gas Flow Measurements Using a Moire' Optical System.

A moire optical system is applied to measurements in forced gas flow. Verification tests on a vertical heated flat plate with one steady and two spark light sources gave acceptable values for the temperature gradient in the boundary layer. The relative efficiency of a nozzle with 12 interchangeable inlet geometries is evaluated by using temperature gradients obtained with the optical system. Calculations of densities using a linear theory developed in the paper gave less than 1 deviation from measured values for a heated flat plate and 4.8 deviation from the isentropic value in supersonic flow.
