Abstract:

A basic problem associated with Target Identification and Acquisition Systems TIAS is to determine the types of data processing that should be performed on emitter signals with various measurable characteristics. This report presents a functional equation solvable by backward induction which will select an optimal data-processing scheme so that timely action with regard to the emitter may be taken. The solution of this functional equation for a hypothetical processing system capable of analyzing a variety of data associated with the signal should indicate the most valuable aspects of emitter data to gather. For advanced TIAS systems a special-purpose computer designed around the solution of such a functional equation may allow for real-time decisions in the processing of data.
