Abstract:

June 1966 marked the beginning of an accelerated effort on the part of the Biological Section Code 3312 to collect and analyze increased quantities of data on the phenomenon of biological sound scattering in the sea. The first step in this direction was the evaluation of the quality and quantity of existing data and of the manner in which the data were collected, organized, and stored in Section files. It was found that the data as previously collected were inadequate in that they lacked sufficient detail concerning the nature and distribution of biological sound scattering in the ocean. This discovery resulted in the redesign of data collection sheets and modifications in data collection procedures. Methods of data collection and storage as practiced by Code 3312 as well as some notes on interpretation of sound scattering records are presented. Author
