Abstract:

Signal losses of a laser system in the presence of atmospheric absorption and scattering are examined. The extinction coefficient of atmospheric water vapor and carbon dioxide is treated with respect to the CO2 laser and experimental verification given. Aerosol extinction and back scattering is analyzed at several wavelengths between 0.34 and 10.6 microns and the results of these calculations given in a manner suitable for determining the expected effect of atmospheric aerosol scattering and loss over various slant paths. Experimental verification for the extinction coefficient is given for aerosol, fog, and precipitation at 0.6328 and 10.6 microns, and for backscattering at 0.6328 microns. Author
