Abstract:

The report covers the initial phase of a study of the use of magnetic or electric fields controlling shear stresses in magnetizable or electrically active fluids, respectively, for driving a high-power, high-frequency vibration and shock exciter. Experiments show that valves with no moving parts are possible by either of the above methods. Preliminary prototype designs are worked out for both a valve-type and a clutch-type drive. Use of electrically active fluids leads to simple construction and fewer problems with wear and fluid separation. Information is given upon which to base a decision whether to concentrate future work on valve or clutch-type devices. Author
