Mathematical techniques have been developed for analyzing iterative algorithms which minimize mean-square error in sonar array signal processing, involving no explicit time-averaging. Analysis shows that these adaptive algorithms can track a moving noise field in the sense that the mean-square error is less than that of the standard processor, and the time-averaged mean-square error can be less than that of a fixed processor which is optimum for only one instant.
