A description is presented of research in linguistic processing at the University of Texas at Austin from its initial mechanical translation project in 1958. Since 1961, computerized experiments in various types of linguistic processing have been carried out at the Linguistics Research Center of the University. In addition to mechanical translation of German, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and several other languages into English, research projects were pursued in language data acquisition, linguistic information storage and retrieval, automatic linguistic classification, and self-organizing linguistic systems. Methodological conclusions are derived from these research experiences regarding the type of theory which is useful in linguistic processing. Major computer systems developed for these experiments are explained and flow-diagrammed. Author
