An analysis is made of the damage to the radio broadcasting and television systems in San Jose, California, resulting from a hypothetical detonation of a high yield, air burst nuclear weapon. Complete descriptions of each TV, FM, or AM station and the area it covers are included damages to the station elements property, staff, and system that would result from the postulated attack are assessed and postattack operational capability of the station is predicted. The analysis reveals that none of the broadcast outlets in San Jose could have remained on the air, or go on the air immediately following the hypothetical burst. Of the nine broadcast outlets in San Jose at the time of the burst two TV, three FM, and four AM stations only one -- KTEH, the channel 54 Santa Clara county educational TV station -- would be capable of immediate operations without commercial power. KXRX, the EBS station, could have become operational in a short period of time. Author
