The purpose of this engineering design test was to determine whether two candidate breathing apparatus, the CF40 and the Closed Circuit Vest Type CCV, are safe to use as components of a tunnel exploration kit. The tests were conducted at Dugway Proving Ground during the period 23 October through 5 December 1967. Testing consisted of subjecting both candidate systems to hydrostatic pressures, low pressures, vibration, shock and wearing trials in an oxygen depleted atmosphere, a high temperature and humidity chamber and during repeated traversals of a tunnel complex. It was found that both the CF40 and the CCV are safe for their intended use. The CF40 apparatus has a considerably longer oxygen duration time than the CCV. Several equipment difficulties were encountered and are discussed in the report. Author
