Abstract:

Electrolyte research studies resulted in a determination of the diffusion coefficient of Cl2 in LiCl at 650C. The sum of the activation energy of diffusion and heat of solution of Cl2 in LiCl was found to be 17.4 k calmole. Several lightweight cell designs were evaluated with major emphasis on a graphite structured cylindrical cell. Demonstrator modules consisting of two cells in series were tested. The results of system studies for short duration power profiles showed that the weight of a battery system, with radiating fins for heat rejection, increases significantly for a battery case temperature below 400F. With respect to system volume, both the Cl2 vapor storage and the radiation cooling fins are contributing factors -- the Cl2 storage being the most significant.
