Abstract:

Coles analytical development of the transformation has been reviewed and its application to the constant pressure turbulent boundary layer studied. The limitations of the theory noted by Baronti and Libby are clarified, and an attempt is made to explain the remaining discrepancies. The equations governing the scaling functions which link the high speed boundary layer to an equivalent low speed flow are derived in terms of the integral properties of the low speed flow for an arbitrary pressure distribution. The modeling is completed by coupling the pressure gradients of the two flows and predicting the behavior of the integral properties of the low speed flow. The resulting formulation predicts the integral properties of the high speed turbulent boundary layer as well as the required modeling to an equivalent low speed flow. Finally, the theory is applied to a variety of situations.
