This state-of-art survey discusses types of ocean platforms, their design, and performance. The types are classified as buoys floating, bottom mounted supported or semisubmersible, and shipshape configurations. The design discussion includes such aspects as speed-power, stability, structure, weight, materials, and environment. The general arrangement and machinery features are not included an adequate discussion of all the many different types was not feasible in the approximately six man months allotted to the project and requires more data than were available on most of the platforms. The section on performance concerns the operation of platforms and factors which influence the design characteristics. Topics include operation, maintenance, station keeping, moving, motions, cost, and failures. Several complete papers andor excerpts are included as appendixes either because they provide historical background or are of exceptional significance in the definitions of the technical part of the state-of-the-art.
