Abstract:
Extrusion has been investigated as a method for fabricating metal matrix composites. The matrix was aluminum and the fibers were discontinuous boron, graphite and stainless steel and -SiC whiskers. Mixtures of aluminum flake and discontinuous fibers were extruded at temperatures exceeding 600C and at extrusion pressures of 30 - 90 ksi. The extrudate showed a high degree of fiber orientation as well as extensive fiber damage. Some strengthening and stiffening were obtained at the 10 vo loading level. Fiber damage appears to be the major limitation of the powder metallurgy approach to extrusion. Author
