Abstract:
The objective of the program was the development of a small, efficient, 8.5 to 9.6 GHz one watt voltage tunable magnetron and the associated pulse swept modulator to be operated from a 24 volt supply. The report reviews the limits of conventional voltage tunable magnetrons designed to operate in the pi mode at X-band and describes the advantages of an X-band theta mode V.T.M. designed to operate as a backward wave device at the resonant frequency of the first higher order cavity mode n 1. The electrical performance at 1 watt, 5 watts, and 10 watts of output power of the theta mode V.T.M. developed during this program is presented with an analysis of theta mode operation. A description of the solid state modulator required to provide power to the V.T.M. is included with an evaluation of system performance. Author
