Development and Evaluation of a One-Piece (Monolithic) Ceramic-GRP Composite Armor System.

The development of a one-piece monolithic ceramicglass-reinforced plastic GRP composite armor system has been accomplished. Two ceramic compositions--AD85 and AD99 Coors Alumina--and two ceramic fabrication procedures--casting and sintering, and isostatic pressing and sintering--were evaluated. An isostatically pressed and sintered AD85 composition proved to be the most appropriate from the standpoint of performance, cost, and availability of facilities to manufacture large quantities. An autoclave procedure for fabricating the GRP back-up was developed to provide good fit of components. Adhesive systems to join ceramic to GRP, and spall shields to suppress forward spall were evaluated. Flexible adhesive systems, 10-20 mils thick, were found to contribute to good ceramic retention and good protective plural-hit capability.
