This report presents the results of an investigation into various methods for measurement of the rise time of very fast pulses. The methods pursued under the study were 1 the investigation of various types of coaxial deflection structures for use in a real-time oscilloscope, 2 characterization of the response of sampling oscilloscopes in the frequency domain and calculation of the response in the time domain and 3 the determination of pulse shape by the Gaddy autocorrelation technique. The techniques can be used to characterize the voltage waveform Vt of fast pulse systems such as impulse generators, time domain reflectometers and some digital and radar systems.
