A full-scale model electron gun was tested in the beam analyzer. The tests resulted in a larger beam diameter and a higher beam perveance on Tube No. X3. The filament now operates within the desired limits, and circulation of the transformer oil is no longer necessary. The response of the traveling wave tube output circuit appears adequate therefore, no circuit design changes are expected. On Tubes Nos. X3 and X4, the elements in the circuit taper were modified to improve the phase characteristics and output transducer match. Further modifications are being made on Tube No. 5 to improve the stability for the pi-mode of the TM sub 01 cavity mode for a TM sub 02 type mode. These appear with some solenoid settings but are very small and quite far removed from the operating frequency band. The test modulator is operating at 9 microseconds dc but requires modification for 45 microseconds. A paralleled-thyratron arrangement will be tried to reduce the excessive loading caused by normal gun arcing during dc processing. The rf circuitry and instrumentation are being examined closely to resolve some discrepancies that have shown up. Equipment for measurement of phase is now being set up, then Tube No. X3 will be tested. Author
