Abstract:

Launched within the framework of the International Geophysical Year, the first artificial satellites provided a source of general information regarding the characteristics and physical processes of the upper atmosphere. More ambitious probes aimed at the distant environment of the Earth, Moon, and outer space were made possible by the first automatic interplanetary stations. This new stage in space investigation provided scientists with an opportunity to verify the hypotheses and ideas which had been advanced concerning the nature of near space and the physical mechanism of the phenomena encountered there. It also marked Mans first contact with an unknown universe in which steadily advancing achievements in rocketry were opening up to his practical activities. Author
