Abstract:

A method is presented for approximately determining the temperatures and thermal stresses in structural members under given edge conditions and in an unsteady temperature field. The method is based on idealizing the structural member through a combination of plates and cylinders with local independent ambient temperatures and thermal stresses. A graphic representation of temperatures and axial thermal stresses, determined for simple edge conditions under these assumptions, makes it possible to find the temperatures and thermal stresses for more general edge conditions by the proper superposition of individual curves the results can then be transferred to the actual structural member. Curves show the dependences of temperatures and thermal stresses on the surface and in the middle of plates and cylinders subjected to linear and irregular variations in the ambient temperature.
