Composites of copper reinforced with .003 inch diameter tantalum filaments have been fabricated elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength, and yield strength have been found to be linear functions of the volume fraction of the filaments. In these composites, the filaments continuously elongated until the fracture of the composite, which accounted for their values of elongation. It has been shown that the tensile strength of the composites of not only the Ta-Cu, but other ductile filament-ductile matrix systems also can be closely predicted. Author
