This article describes the 50 year growth of the All-Union Institute of Experimental Veterinary Medicine earlier known as GIEV and now as VIEV from its founding on 30 January 1918 in Petrograd as the successor to the Veterinary Laboratory of the Ministry of the Interior. The main mission of VIEV is to do the work and give direction on the problem development of the theoretical bases, prophylactic measures, and treatments for infectious and protozoic diseases of livestock. The article traces the development of VIEV into a large scientific research institute by examining the proliferation of its special departments and various directors. Author
